The glaucoma prevention is a three dimensional examination of the retina and optic nerve head. The examination using the “Retina Tomograph” (HRT: Heidelberger Retina Tomograph) has found its way as a standard into the ambulatory treatment centers for pathological and nonpathological changes of the optic nerve head. The reason is that this instrument is able to register, compare and evaluate the findings much more exactly. Therefore this instrument gives us a huge advantage in defining therapy and the efficacy thereof compared to the days without it.

This examination is typically useful with patients with

  • Glaucoma
  • Glaucoma in relatives
  • obvious excavation of the optic nerve head
  • Changes in the form of the optic nerve head
  • Ocular Hypertension (high pressure without changes of the optic nerve head)

The tomography is painless and without any danger. It takes about 10 minutes.

The recordings are taken using harmless laserrays. There is no visual impairment afterwards. The method being new, there is no reimbursement from the Krankenkasse. It has to be paid privately. The private insurance companies usually do reimburse the expenses.
