What is a cataract?

The opacification of the human lens is called cataract. One notices a slight haze, that deteriorates in due course. Frequently an increased glare is noticed. There are many different causes for cataract, the commonest cause being old age, due to the reduced metabolism. This type is called senile cataract. Most of the time it occurs in ages over 60. In fact it isn´t a disease nor is it dangerous.

Glaucoma is quite another story. This disease expresses itself in the form of visual field loss. Peculiarly only in the latest fase of the disease the visual acuity is deteriorating. In the course of the disease the visual field contracts. In the end there is only a narrow tunnel of vision left. The cause is a complex of intraocular pressure and the bloodperfusion. The treatment consists of pressure reducing agents or even surgical procedures and a painstaking controling of the visual fields and anatomical conditions of the optic nerve head.
